What Happens at a Check-up and Dental Cleaning Visit?

Dental Cleaning And Examinations Normal, IL

A check-up and dental cleaning is the most common reason that patients visit the dentist. It is also the best way to help prevent the development of oral health concerns such as cavities and periodontal disease. The following review highlights what happens at a check-up and dental cleaning visit to help you physically and mentally prepare.

How the check-up and dental cleaning process works

Every check-up and cleaning visit is unique. However, the most common steps involved include dental X-rays, answering patient questions, an oral examination, teeth cleaning, teeth polishing, and a follow-up treatment recommendation. This process is non-invasive and helps reduce the risk of needing more extensive treatment in the future.

Dental X-rays

Dental X-rays are only required once every one to three years or on the patient’s first visit with a new dentist, so it is not required for every dental cleaning visit. However, for visits in which dental X-rays are necessary, this is often the first thing that happens during the visit.

Answer patient questions

After dental X-rays, the patient can ask the dentist any questions that they have about their oral health or the appearance of their smile. They can also discuss any issues that the patient is having or specific procedures that the patient may be interested in. This allows the patient and the dentist to get to know each other and establish treatment goals.

The oral examination

An oral examination involves the physical inspection of the patient’s teeth, gums, cheeks, etc. The dentist uses special dental instruments to view all areas of teeth, measure the depth of gum pockets, and more. This ensures that they do not miss any concerns, especially when combined with dental X-rays.

Oral prophylaxis

Oral prophylaxis, which is known more commonly as a routine dental cleaning, includes a process known as scaling. This involves the removal of dental plaque and tartar from the enamel of all the teeth and along the gum line, which can help prevent the development of cavities, periodontal disease, and other concerns.

Teeth polishing

Teeth polishing is an extra step often taken during the routine dental cleaning, in which the enamel is made smoother and any additional tartar buildup is removed. This can also help remove stains and make teeth appear less rough.

Treatment recommendation

If the patient has ideal oral health, then the dentist may schedule a check-up and cleaning in four to six months. If there are specific oral health issues that need treatment (e.g., cavity fillings), then the dentist can either perform the treatment the same day or schedule a follow-up visit in the near future for restorative dental treatment.
