Five Tips to Prepare for an Implant Restoration

Dental Implant Restoration Normal, IL

An implant restoration is a great way to replace one or more missing teeth. However, the placement of dental implants involves a surgical procedure, and it is helpful to understand how you can prepare beforehand to make the process easier and less stressful.

Five tips to follow when preparing for implant restoration

You can prepare for an implant restoration by following all of the specific instructions your dentist provides. This may include but is not limited to not eating for at least 12 hours before the placement procedure, finding ways to relax the night before, and arriving on time on the day of the scheduled procedure.

Follow the dentist’s preparation instructions

There are standard preparations that a dentist may recommend before the placement of the dental implant(s). However, there may be specific instructions that the dentist provides to help patients prepare as well. It is important to discuss with the dentist and their staff how you can best prepare and what, if any, special instructions they have for you to follow.

Do not eat before the procedure

It is recommended not to eat for 8 to 12 hours before surgery, assuming that general anesthesia or IV sedation is used. This is simply done to protect the patient from any issues (i.e. vomiting) during the implant restoration procedure. After the surgical procedure is over, the patient is free to eat as they desire, although sticking to a soft diet is recommended since the mouth will be sore.

Find ways to relax the night before

It is also helpful to find ways to relax the night before the scheduled implant placement procedure. For example, it may help to watch a movie with the family or play a board game. This is particularly useful for anyone who may deal with anxiety the night before. Also, be sure to get plenty of rest the night before the scheduled procedure as well.

Go shopping ahead of time for soft foods and water

It is best to stick to a soft diet for the first week after implant placement as the mouth is likely to be sore and chewing will be more of a challenge. Most do not want to go shopping after the procedure, so it is best to go shopping for soft foods and water a day or two before.

Give yourself time and arrive early

Another great way to minimize anxiety about your implant restoration procedure is to give yourself plenty of time the day of the procedure, rather than rushing to make it on time. Be sure to get plenty of rest, wake up on time, and account for any traffic you may experience.
